（Sonnet to Liberty）
并非因为我爱你的孩子，他们麻木的双眼
（Not that I love thy children, whose dull eyes）
除却自身不幸的灾难便一无所见，
（See nothing save their own unlovely woe）
他们的心中一无所知，也无意知悉
（Whose minds know nothing, nothing care to know, ——）
而是因为你关于民主的呼唤，
（But that the roar of thy Democracies, ）
你的恐怖统治，你伟大的无政府混乱
（Thy reigns of Terror, thy great Anarchies）
映照出我海洋一般狂野的激情
（Mirror my wildest passions like the sea）
为我的愤怒找到一个兄弟——！自由！
（And give my rage a brother——! Liberty! ）
仅仅由于这个原因，你刺耳的叫喊
（For this sake only do thy dissonant cries）
让我如履薄冰的灵魂欢欣，否则所有的君主
（Delight my discreet soul, else might all kings）
都会用染血的鞭笞和奸恶的炮击
（By bloody knout or treacherous cannonades）
来掠夺各地神圣不可侵犯的权利，
（Rob nations of their rights inviolate）
而我虽然不能动弹——可是，可是，
（And I remain unmoved——and yet, and yet, ）
这些救世主尽管死在了街垒之上，
（These Christs that die upon the barricades, ）
上帝却知道我与他们同在，和他们共行。
